With most people calling their place of work as their second home, considering that in most instances, people spend a good fraction of their lives at their office or carrying out work-related duties, making the working environment a pleasurable place to be, is of utmost importance.

My study focused on the manager employee relationship, specifically on the effect a manager’s emotional intelligence can have on his/her employee. Having a vast list of benefits people and organisations can achieve when the manager-employee relationship is emotionally intelligent, this dissertation aims to focus on the effects having an emotionally intelligent manager can have on the employees’ intention of retaining their employment. In order to achieve such goals, this research focused on one specific organisation, Elmo Insurance Limited – Malta, in which I am employed too.

This dissertation looks into the characteristics of emotional intelligence and the effect it can has on employee behaviour.
Furthermore, it sees to the different management leadership styles and the effect management behaviour can have on his/her subordinates.

It addresses the most common factors that incentive people to look for alternative employment as well as looks into the different expectations people from different generations have in relation to their employment.
